FDDI LENDS HELPING HAND TO ETHIOPIAN LEATHER INDUSTRY
 
 

The Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) has expanded its wings across the globe and has earned reputed position for its technical expertise and knowledge at the international forum.

 

With its tailor-made services, the FDDI has become a synonym for the growth of the leather sector resulting in many countries seeking the expertise from FDDI in the growth path of their leather sector.

 
“The purpose of the visit of the delegation was to understand the growth path of Footwear & Leather Product Industry of India and the significant role of FDDI in facilitating the growth mechanism for the Indian Leather Industry so that the same can be replicated in Ethiopia.” - Mr. Raajeev j Lakhara, IRS, Managing Director, FDDI.
 
The visit by the high level delegation from Ethiopia on December 21, 2010 is an outcome of the fame and trust acquired by the FDDI in this arena.

The delegation consisted of Mr. Yonas Desta, Director of Leather Industry Development Institute (LIDI); Mr. Abdissa Adugna, Secretary to the Ethiopian Leather Industrialists Association; Mr. Solomon Getu, Director General of Crystal Tannery and Vice President of Ethiopian Leather Industrialists Association; Mr. Elias Bedada, Advisory Board Member of Leather Sector to the Ministry of Industry and Member of Steering Committee for Leather Sector Development in the Ministry of Industry and Mr. Wondimu Kumera, Director of LIDI met the Managing Director, Mr. Raajeev j Lakhara, IRS and had a very long discussion.

 

The delegation discussed in length about the curriculum development process of the Institute, methodologies of promoting training programs among the industry, programs and services offered by the FDDI, shared experience of FDDI with regards to linkages with higher institutions, research institutions and the private sector etc.

Sharing the details, Mr. Raajeev j Lakhara, IRS, Managing Director, FDDI said, “The purpose of the visit of the delegation was to understand the growth path of Footwear & Leather Product Industry of India and the significant role of FDDI in facilitating the growth mechanism for the Indian Leather Industry so that the same can be replicated in Ethiopia.”

 

Leather is one of the main industrial sectors in Ethiopia which has been given high priority in the Industrial Policy of the Government of Ethiopia. In order to provide an impetus for the development of the Ethiopian leather sector, the delegation visited the FDDI for sharing the experiences and practices of FDDI that would help in their sectoral reform policies.

 

“With the critical inputs provided by the FDDI, the delegation will be able to develop a joint document for the Ministry of Industry, Govt. of Ethiopia which will help the Ministry's efforts in calibrating the support mechanisms for the Leather Sector Development of Ethiopia,” added Mr. Lakhara.

 

A team of highly qualified experts from FDDI, in its first phase, has already provided consultancy for seven Footwear industries of Addis Ababa such as Kangaroo Shoe Company PLC, Ras Dashen Shoe Factory, Anbessa Shoe SC, Peacock Shoes, Ramsay Shoe Factory, Jamaica Shoe Factory etc., in the area of Production, Management, Design, Technology, Planning, Productivity, Quality etc,. resulting in enhancing the global competency at firm level.

 

The performance of FDDI has been reported to be highly satisfactory meeting the expectations of the Industry and other Govt. Bodies involved and understanding the capabilities of FDDI, the Ethiopian Govt. again requested the FDDI to provide the second phase of consultancy to the Leather Industry of Ethiopia.

 

“In order to provide the second phase of consultancy, a team of highly qualified experts from FDDI went for Ethiopia in the first week of December 2010,” shared Mr. Lakhara.

 

During the visit of the Ethiopian delegation, the staffs of FDDI briefed about the services being provided by the Institute for the growth of the industry.

 

The delegation visited the International Testing Center of FDDI, the pilot plant, library, classrooms, Information Technology Services Center (ITSC) etc. and was highly impressed with the vision of FDDI's management, the facility, the infrastructure & the services provided by FDDI for the growth of the industry.
