Foundation stone of the additional 'Girl's Hostel' & 'International Design Studio' laid by the Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Mr. Rahul Gandhi at FDDI, Fursatganj, Rae Bareli.

The newly constructed building of the Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) Fursatganj, Rae Bareli was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Mr. Rahul Gandhi alongwith the Hon'ble Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, Mr. Anand Sharma on 15th November 2010 at 2.00 PM.

 

The Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Mr. Rahul Gandhi alongwith the Member of Parliament & Chairperson of UPA, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi had laid the foundation stone of the 'Footwear Design & Development Institute' at Fursatganj, Rae Bareli District on 13th February, 2007.

The FDDI Fursatganj, Rae Bareli campus has been established within a record time of 12 months and the Institute has been made operational from the academic session 2008-09.

The Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Mr. Rahul Gandhi alongwith the Hon'ble Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, Mr. Anand Sharma visited the pilot plant, computer centre, classroom, library etc., and were happy to see the world-class infrastructure present in the Institute.
 
All efforts are on to make the FDDI a leader on the world stage. For this, the Institute has tied up with leading design & fashion Institutes in the world such as ARS Sutoria- Milan, Italy, Mode Pelle- Milan, Italy & Fashion Institute of Technology- New York, America for offering world class design oriented programmes at the Institute.” - Hon'ble Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Mr. Anand Sharma
 
The ample air-conditioned classrooms, technical workshops equipped with modern state-of-art machineries, its conference halls, seminar halls, auditorium, open-air theatre, computer labs and the library along with fully furnished separate Girls & Boys Hostel makes FDDI Fursatganj, Rae Bareli campus the most modern and world-class Institute.

In his inaugural speech the Hon'ble Member of Parliament, Mr. Rahul Gandhi said, “For any industry, design development institute is of paramount importance because without this, the industry cannot achieve quality.”

He further said that, “To provide skilled manpower to the leather industry, a new centre of FDDI is going to be very soon inaugurated where 750 people will be trained through which India will establish its brand in the footwear sector.”

During interaction with the students of the FDDI, Mr. Rahul Gandhi highlighted the need to hone their competitive streak and said that “Countries are built on the manufacturing sector and India is no different. Services, in itself, cannot absorb so many people. Manufacturing is a labour intensive sector. We can train our workforce and make them capable enough to tackle the competition from China and Vietnam.”

Exhorting the young audience to put their act together, Mr. Rahul Gandhi said that nothing was ever offered to anyone on a platter. No outsider will come and help you build your nation, that is, the task you all will have to do yourself. The key to empowerment, he emphasized, was through political system. "I am spending a lot of time trying to open the doors of political system for young people like you," he said.

Commenting on the oft repeated assertion that India can make a skip in the manufacturing sector in its transition from agriculture to service sector, Mr. Rahul Gandhi said he firmly believed India's future was in the manufacturing sector.

 

Everybody was enriched by Mr. Rahul Gandhi's vision, his views about education in India, the involvement of youth in Indian politics and development as a whole.

 

On this occasion, the foundation stone for additional 'Girl's Hostel' at FDDI, Fursatganj, Rae Bareli campus was also laid by Mr. Rahul Gandhi. This hostel will have facilities for 250 students with Wi-Fi connectivity, indoor games, RO water system, Power Backup, Mess facilities, etc. for safe, secure and hygienic residential facilities for the students which is expected to be ready within one year time.

Students performed folk dance and displayed their work in the form of a show. They also put up stalls displaying the footwear & leather art crafts. They also depicted the evolution of retail. The entire show was much appreciated by Mr. Rahul Gandhi & Mr. Anand Sharma.

In his speech, the Hon'ble Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Govt. of India, Mr. Anand Sharma said there is a huge need for skilled workers in the footwear industry. “We need 2.5 million people in this sector and there is a need to follow international fashion trends and think big,” he stated.

 

He further said that, “All efforts are on to make the FDDI a leader on the world stage. For this, the Institute has tied up with the leading design & fashion Institutes of the world such as ARS Sutoria - Milan, Italy, Mode Pelle- Milan, Italy & Fashion Institute of Technology - New York, America for offering world class design oriented programmes at the Institute.”

Smart class rooms along with adequate number of exclusive workshops in each area of Manufacturing Technology are created to encourage interactive and practical oriented training in the FDDI Fursatganj, Rae Bareli campus besides the support infrastructure suchas auditorium equipped with modern gadgets, high tech IT lab, sports complex, comprehensive library equipped with international journals/magazines and titles etc., to encourage continuous learning and research environment in the campus. Separate Boys and Girls hostel with capacity of 500 students along with staff quarters have also been established in the campus.

The 'International Design Studio' was necessitated keeping the inadequate competence of the Indian footwear and leather product industries in the area of design and product innovations, fashion and trend forecasting and range building which is considered as one of the major reasons affecting the performance of Indian leather sector in the global arena.

On this occasion, Mr. M Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman FDDI, Mr. Rajeev Lakhara, IRS, Managing Director, FDDI, Mr. Shashi Bhushan Shukla, IRS, Secretary, FDDI, Mr. Deepak Kumar, IRS, Executive Director, FDDI and distinguished guests from Rae Bareli & Amethi were also present.

In his keynote address, Mr. M. Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman, FDDI said, “Today FDDI is widely recognized as 'One stop solution provider' for the Footwear, Leather Products and allied Industries not only in India but, also in the neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and African countries and the Institute is in expansion mode.”

 

The first batch of FDDI Fursatganj, Rae Bareli of approximately 120 students has passed in May-June, 2010. The response of the industry for recruiting the FDDI pass outs from Fursatganj has been highly encouraging as the Institute witnessed the presence of major International Retail, Leather Goods & Footwear companies and the FDDI achieved 100% placement for its students.

 

Leading corporate and MNCs like Reliance, Liberty, Lakhani, Pantaloon, Vishal Megamart, TATA International, Bata India have recruited the students from FDDI Fursatganj, Rae Bareli campus.

The students were placed in the companies before the completion of their courses and have been placed in their dream companies with the desired profile and expected package.

 

The Managing Director of FDDI, Mr. Rajeev Lakhara, IRS, in his address said, “FDDI is committed for the growth of the leather and leather products industry and to the region for opening the window of development.”

At present, various PG and UG courses in the footwear, retail, and the leather goods sector are being successfully run in the FDDI Fursatganj, Rae Bareli campus.

 

Extracurricular and sports activities such as Technical Mela, Creative & design exhibition etc., are also being encouraged as a regular feature in the campus to create a conducive environment for the overall growth and personality development of the students of FDDI, Fursatganj, Rae Bareli.

 

With this Institute the industries at Kanpur and Unnao are extremely benefited by closer proximity of resources, a world class training center and an expert for helping them to adopt changes as per market requirement.

 

Replying on the query raised by the media persons, Mr. Lakhara, said, “This Institute is having latest machinery, electronic and CAD/CAM based design support. The Institute is also assisting those who want to set up their own industry and is helping the organization to grow the business not only in India, but across the globe.”
