Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) participated in the 33rd India International Leather Fair (IILF-2018), which was held between 31st January to 3rd February 2018 at Chennai Trade Centre, Nandambakkam, Chennai.
Mr. Suresh Prabhu, Hon'ble Minister for Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India inaugurated the fair in the august presence of Mr. M. C. Sampath, Hon'ble Minister for Industries, Steel Control & Special Initiatives, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Thiru P.Benjamin, Hon'ble Minister for Rural Industries including Cottage Industries and Small Industries, Govt. of Tamil Nadu, Mr. L. C. Goyal, CMD, India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) Mr. Mukhtarul Amin, Chairman, Council for Leather Exports (CLE).
Over 450 exhibitors from India and overseas countries which included participation from Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, The Netherlands, Turkey, UAE, and United Kingdom displayed their products.
The fair had on display the entire range of products relating to leather industry from raw material to finished products and auxiliary products such as finished leather; shoes; shoe components – uppers, soles, heels, counters, lasts; leather garments, fashion accessories, leather goods – wallets, belts, gloves, portfolios, handbags; saddlery and harness; machinery and equipment and chemicals.
At the opening ceremony, distribution of the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) Export Excellence Awards 2016-17 was presented for best export performance in different product categories under various export turnover slabs.
With an annual turnover of $17.66 billion, the export of Indian leather and leather products increased manifold over the past decades and touched US$ 5.67 billion in 2016-17, recording a Cumulative Annual Growth Rate of about 3.09 per cent growth (5 years).
The students of FDDI displayed a wide range of creations at its stall located at Convention Centre O9-A that included ladies and gents shoes, casual and formal footwear and sports shoes, fashion accessories, leather goods - travelware, belts, portfolios, handbags and wallets.
During the IILF 2018, interviews for the FDDI students with prospective employers directly at the stall of FDDI were also conducted which turned out to a fruitful one.
The services of the FDDI’s International Testing Centres (ITC) for supporting the footwear and leather industry, through a host of testing solutions and services with minimum possible time was also provided to the perspective visitors.
Information about the academic programmes of the FDDI which is having the status of ‘Institute of National Importance’ as per FDDI Act, 2017 located at different parts of the country with well-designed campuses at Noida, Fursatganj, Chennai, Kolkata, Rohtak, Chhindwara, Guna, Jodhpur Ankleshwar, Banur, Patna and Hyderabad was also provided to the students.
During the fair, CLE organized the 3rd edition of ‘Designers Fair’ in Hotel ITC Grand Chola, Chennai from Feb. 1-3, 2018 in which 30 overseas Designers, and 11 Designers and Institutions from India participated.
The ‘Designers Fair’ provides an opportunity to the Indian manufacturers and exporters of leather products and footwear to meet popular overseas and Indian designers.
IILF was an ideal place to present the multifaceted splendor of the Indian Leather Industry that allows traders/ manufacturers to interact with the industry focused buyers at a common platform.
