The newly constructed building of the Hyderabad campus of Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) - an Institution of National Importance (INI), was inaugurated on 5th July 2018 by the Hon’ble Minister of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, Mr. Suresh Prabhu in the august presence of Mr. Boora Narsaiah Goud, Member of Parliament.
FDDI campus is located in Telangana State Leather Industries Promotional Corporation (TSLIPC) Nilex campus, HS Dargah, Gachibowli, Bidar-Hyderabad Road, Hyderabad, Telangana.
On this occasion, Mr. Arun Kumar Sinha, IAS, Managing Director (MD), FDDI, Mr. Vivek Sharma, IRS, Secretary, FDDI, Mr. Vikas Verma, IRS, Executive Director, FDDI, Mr. Motilal Sethi, Member, Governing Council, FDDI and the staff of the Institute were present.
Mrs. Anita Praveen, IAS, Joint Secretary (JS), Department of Commerce, Government of India, Mr. Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Principal Secretary of the Industries & Commerce (I&C) and Information Technology (IT) Departments of the Telangana Government, Mr. O. Raj Kumar, Jt. Director (GA), Commissioner Industries State Government of Telangana, Mr. Srinivas Naik, VC & MD, Telangana Leather Industries Limited, Mr. Krishna, General Manager, Leather Industries Telangana Industries, Mrs. Jyotirmal Associate Professor/Joint Director – National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and Mr. S. Tiwari CEO, Takshashila Institutions were also present.
The Hon'ble C&IM inaugurated the FDDI Hyderabad campus by unveiling the Plaque at 05.10 PM.
To cover the inaugural ceremony of the FDDI Hyderabad campus a large number of media which included representatives from The Hindu – Special correspondent, Eenadu, Sakshi, Andhra Jyothi, Deccan Chronical, Economic Times, V6, Telangana Today, Namastey Telangana, E TV, TV 5, Ruby TV, BBN News, Deccan TV, Andhra Prabha, Siyasat, Hindi Milap, TV 9 and other many channels were present.
The state-of-the-art campus is having a capacity to train 700-750 students and ensures international standards of training and high end support services to the Industry in the domain of Footwear & Leather Products Design Technology, Retail Management and Fashion Merchandise.
The lush green campus of FDDI is spread over an area of 15 acre land with all the amenities. It is having fully furnished Library with vast collection of books and magazines (4000 Titles), a 100 seated Computer Lab and 30 seater CAD/CAM Lab. Besides this, the campus also having Retail and Visual Lab, workshops for Footwear, Apparel and Fashion Design and Cafeteria.
It has ultra-modern auditorium with 300 seating capacity equipped with audio and video equipments, centrally air-conditioned class rooms and lecture halls.
Delivering the ‘Welcome Address’, Mr. Arun Kumar Sinha, IAS, Managing Director, FDDI said, “The Leather, Footwear and Products Industry has tremendous potential for growth and employment generation as it is having affluence of raw materials, skilled manpower, innovative technology, and the strong presence of the allied industries which has also been granted an unprecedented Rs. 2600/- Crore Leather package.”
He further said, “To meet the challenges of the Leather, Footwear and Products Industry, we at FDDI are committed to provide the students with the best of the academics and facilities that is expected of an INI.”
“I am very happy to announce that the curriculum of FDDI has been upgraded by the faculty members based on the Industry inputs and further International Experts were roped-in to ensure that the various curriculums are in sync with the industry requirements and are of international standards. This new curriculum will be made applicable to students from the current academic session commencing from August 2018,” added Mr. Sinha.
Apart from academic infrastructure, this magnificent and beautiful campus is also having Badminton, Table Tennis, Football and Cricket playgrounds. The Boys hostel capacity is 228 and Girl’s hostel capacity is 144.
Delivering the ‘Keynote Address’, the Hon’ble Minister of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, Mr. Suresh Prabhu said, “The leather sector of the country, one of the traditional industries, faced many challenges. If the challenges are not addressed immediately, it would put the industry in existential crisis. In order to address the challenges, the Centre would implement a holistic strategy to ‘rejuvenate and reinvent’ the country’s leather sector.”
He further said that, “This strategy, backed by a Rs. 2,600 Crore package, seeks to focus on technology upgradation in the sector through investments on plant and machinery, focus on creating trained human resource by offering stipends and improve access to markets globally by building brand equity.”
“The package would create five to six lakh direct jobs. The Centre’s new Industrial Policy is also likely to be announced soon,” added Mr. Prabhu.
Stressing on value addition in leather sector, Mr. Prabhu said ‘Institutions such as FDDI played a key role in that direction with the training they impart on design aspects.”
Mr. Prabhu thanked the Telangana Government for providing land for the establishment of FDDI Hyderabad campus.
Considering the long felt demand of trained manpower of the Footwear and Leather Product Industry and to ensure the presence of FDDI in this region, a full-fledged campus of FDDI at Hyderabad has been established under the Mission Mode Programme of Government of India with a total project outlay of Rs. 115.95 Crores. The leather sector is given utmost importance considering its huge potential in generating employment and export. The Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India has sanctioned to establish a full-fledged campus at Hyderabad in Telangana.
Under the Establishment of Institutional Facilities, Sub-Scheme of Indian Footwear, Leather and Accessories Development Programme (IFLADP) of Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Government of India this Hyderabad campus of FDDI will be upgraded as ‘Centres of Excellence (CoE)’.
It will be an extended CoE of Chennai which will create new products and life style accessories. It will be having collaboration with renowned international fashion houses. It will also be promoting interface of various fabrics besides leather for embellishment, ornamentations and applique through the upper designing process which is done quite efficiently in the various CAD systems.
