The students of Foundation batch of the Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI), Kolkata were taken on educational tour to Kumartuli on 28th September 2018.
Kumartuli holds an important place in history which has a long tradition of clay idol-making along with a strong association with the most important festival of Bengal – Durga Puja.
There are about 450 workshops in Kumartuli which are run by families that have been into idol-making and pottery for generations.
Under the guidance of the highly experienced faculty of the FDDI, a group of 90 students were taken to Kumartuli with the objective of giving them an idea of art and sculpture.
During the visit, the students were familiarized to a broad variety of techniques and approaches to working in pottery that demands intricacy, delicacy and creativity.
The visit was an eye-opener for many of the students which will help them in their professional skill enhancement.
