Research Contribution on Zero-Waste and Low-Waste Pattern Cutting Strategies in Footwear Upper Design by FDDI Fursatganj Faculty

A research article authored by Mr. Abhishek Kumar Saxena, Faculty –FDDI Fursatganj, has been published in January 2026 in the International Journal of Innovative Research in Technology (IJIRT) (Volume 12, Issue 8, ISSN: 2349-6002).

Titled “Zero-Waste and Low-Waste Pattern Cutting Strategies in Footwear Upper Design,” the paper presents a rigorous technical investigation into waste-minimizing pattern engineering methodologies for footwear upper development. The study addresses material inefficiencies inherent in conventional pattern cutting practices, which often result in excessive offcuts and unused material.

Adopting a qualitative, practice-based research approach, the study integrates an extensive literature review with pattern experimentation and prototype development. It evaluates strategies such as integrated component layouts, geometric restructuring of pattern pieces, and optimized marker planning. The findings demonstrate significant improvements in material utilization efficiency while preserving essential design parameters, including ergonomic fit, structural integrity, functional performance, and visual appeal.

The research emphasizes the importance of incorporating sustainability-driven interventions at the design stage and advocates for the integration of zero-waste and low-waste pattern engineering approaches within academic curricula and industrial practices, contributing to responsible and scalable production systems.
