On 16 February 2026, the II Year B.Des Fashion Design (FD) students of FDDI, Chennai Campus, accompanied by faculty members, visited the Government Museum, Egmore, Chennai, renowned for its rich and diverse collection of textiles, sculptures, paintings, and archaeological artifacts. The visit commenced with a guided tour of the textile and art galleries, where students explored exhibits showcasing ancient weaving techniques, handwoven fabrics, natural dyeing processes, intricate embroidery styles, and traditional attire representing various periods of Indian history. The galleries featuring temple sculptures and paintings further enhanced students’ understanding of historical draping styles, motifs, and ornamentation used in traditional fashion.
The visit enabled students to gain a comprehensive understanding of ancient Indian textile traditions, including handloom weaving, natural dyeing, and regional embroidery techniques, while deepening their appreciation of fashion history and the adaptation of historical costumes in contemporary design. Exposure to traditional artifacts enhanced their recognition of the skill, precision, and cultural significance of indigenous craftsmanship, inspired them to incorporate heritage elements into modern fashion concepts, and reinforced the importance of textile conservation as a key component of sustainable fashion practices.
